The two sons said in the statement that "we join our father in recognizing Roger's remarkable contributions to our company," but also hinted about the accusations against him.
"We continue our commitment to maintaining a work environment based on trust and respect," the brothers said. "We take seriously our responsibility to uphold these traditional, long-standing values of our company."
A former consultant to Republican presidents, Ailes, 76, had been a key figure in the media empire and a longtime Murdoch ally.

"The personal, that is, non-magisterial, nature of the document is also evident in the fact that the references cited are principally the final report of the 2015 session of the Synod of Bishops and the addresses and homilies of Pope Francis himself," Burke wrote in the National Catholic Register.

"Entrenched ways take a while to change," said Marisa Tomei, "but having the conversations and opening it up, objecting to it or seeing different points of view about it is really helpful."
"I applaud Jennifer," said actress Allison Janney.
"I hate that she had to do it, but I think she just had enough."
FILE - In this April 13, 2016 file photo, Jennifer Aniston arrives at the Los Angeles premiere of "Mother's Day." Aniston wrote in her Huffington Post essay earlier this month that constant tabloid speculation over whether shes pregnant contributes to sexist cultural standards that equate a womans worth with her appearance and maternal status.

Trump announced on Twitter Friday morning that he's selected Pence as his running mate, capping a wild 24 hours of speculation interrupted by the truck attack in Nice, France, that left scores dead.
Not so long ago, their relationship was a little awkward. Trump met privately with Pence before Indiana's primaries, seeking his endorsement. Instead, Pence, under pressure from national conservatives, tepidly endorsed Trump's rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, while still lavishing praise on Trump.

"More scrutiny has always been leveled at women, no matter the context," said Ella Ceron, digital entertainment editor for Teen Vogue magazine. "Women are held to different standards than men, and are taught from a young age to value their looks and their grooming and their weight very seriously."
While tabloids have long seen women through an appearance-focused lens, other recent press coverage unduly aimed at actresses' looks has inspired vocal criticism online. A June article in Variety in which its film critic maligns Renee Zellweger's face based on her appearance in a trailer for "Bridget Jones's Baby" inspired an impassioned response from actress Rose McGowan, who called the piece "vile, damaging, stupid and cruel." Variety has declined comment.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - As a conservative talk-radio host in the 1990s, Mike Pence described himself as "Rush Limbaugh on decaf."
Two decades later, Pence is the unflappable conservative governor of Indiana who's being plucked by Republican presidential contender Donald Trump as his running mate.

Israel says it has been willing to negotiate an end to occupation, but that Palestinians rejected or responded with violence to generous Israeli offers in 2000 and 2008. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he remains open to talks, but he has shown little faith in Abbas.
Talks have been at a standstill since Netanyahu took office in 2009.
Palestinians say a systematic colonization of east Jerusalem and the West Bank belies Israel's claims that it is serious about ending occupation. Many members of Netanyahu's government oppose Palestinian statehood, and several advocate annexing large parts of the West Bank.

Israel refused to recognize the community or hook it up to electricity and water grids, while providing such services to the settlement of Susiya and unauthorized Jewish outposts in the area. Israel has also threatened to demolish the Palestinian village of tents and shacks.

The former congressman also is a proven fundraiser with close ties to billionaire industrialists David and Charles Koch and their network of wealthy donors, many of whom have been dismissive of Trump.
"One thing you can say about Mike Pence is he's got a very calm, steady demeanor that in some ways is a little Reaganesque," said Christine Mathews, a Republican pollster for former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels. "He's a counterbalance to Trump in that way."

During the early years of President Barack Obama's administration, Pence helped lead the opposition to the Democrat's agenda.
"He has a particularly strong talent, a gift if you will, for being able to stick to principle while making his political opponents or those who disagree with him feel like they are being heard and respected," said Ryan Streeter, a former Pence aide and George W.

In this Tuesday, July 12, 2016 photo, Irish author Colm Toibin, listens to an audio presentation during a tour of the Susiya archaeological park, adjacent to the West Bank village of Susiya, south of Hebron. Toibin has toured the West Bank to observe Israeli military rule over the Palestinians, collecting material for an essay that will be part of an anthology on 50 years of occupation. The 2017 book includes contributions from two dozen well-known authors who have written about subjects ranging from Israels military courts to a weekend in Gaza.Where Trump is impulsive, Pence is cool-headed. Where Trump makes conservatives suspicious, Pence has credibility. And where Trump struggles to draw evangelical Christians, Pence is well-regarded by them.

"It's not a European way of looking at, like, movie stars who look like real people," Streisand said. "They have flaws, you know."
Jamie Lee Curtis recalled a magazine photo shoot more than 15 years ago where she insisted on being photographed before the hair and makeup wizards worked their magic.
"It was my way of making my statement back in the day," Curtis said. "And now Jennifer's written what she wrote ... It's an important conversation."

    - Home for conservatives -
Under his leadership, Fox became home to key conservative political commentators, drawing an audience distinct from rivals CNN and MSNBC.
David Greenberg, a Rutgers University political scientist, said in a Politico essay that Ailes essentially created modern conservatism in the United States, having worked with presidents from Richard Nixon to Ronald Reagan to George H.W. Bush.
"In fact, apart from the presidents he served, he was arguably the single most important figure in the creation of modern conservatism," Greenberg wrote.

The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano on Wednesday carried a lengthy essay by an Italian Catholic historian insisting that Francis' "The Joy of Love" was absolutely in line with his predecessors and church doctrine on the thorny issue of whether divorced and civilly remarried Catholics can receive Communion.

FILE - In this Tuesday, July 12, 2016 file photo, The Tenors, shown on the scoreboard, perform during the Canadian National Anthem prior to the MLB baseball All-Star Game, in San Diego. A member of a Canadian singing quartet changed a lyric in his country's national anthem and held up a sign proclaiming "All Lives Matter" during a pregame performance at the 87th All-Star Game on Tuesday.

"By fusing television's power to conjure feelings of anger and resentment to an ideology of cultural populism that demonized liberal elites, Ailes set forth the methods and the message that would help conservative politicians win and maintain power for decades."
But critics said Ailes and Fox were blatantly partisan.
"Despite its 'Fair and Balanced' slogan, Fox News under Ailes' leadership has embraced its role as the communications arm of the Republican Party," said Eric Hananoki and Ben Dimiero in a column for the watchdog group Media Matters for America.

Pence's congressional experience is one trait that Trump, who has never held public office, wanted in a running mate.
Marc Short, a former Pence aide and top Koch brothers operative, elaborated: "He's worked with (House Speaker) Paul Ryan. He's worked with the team in House leadership. He's somebody who has deep relationships in the evangelical movement, and he's somebody who has foreign affairs experience."

The anthology, to be published in English, Hebrew, Arabic and several other languages, was conceived by Shaul and Waldman, who say they are Israeli patriots and want to contribute to ending occupation by helping shift public opinion at home and abroad.

"During the Obama administration, this partisanship accelerated as the network openly campaigned for Republican candidates, launched the Tea Party movement, became a farm system for Republican politicians and served as the stage for Republican presidential primaries, among other egregious ethical issues."
The sexual harassment suit filed in New Jersey state court said Ailes terminated Carlson, a popular host and former Miss America, as a retaliatory act.
Ailes "unlawfully retaliated against Carlson and sabotaged her career because she refused his sexual advances and complained about severe and pervasive sexual harassment," the lawsuit alleges. Ailes denied the allegations.

After attending Hanover College, Pence graduated from Indiana University Law School in 1986. He met his wife, Karen, around the same time and twice unsuccessfully ran for Congress before taking a job at Indiana Policy Review, a conservative think-tank. In a 1991 essay titled "Confessions of a Negative Campaigner," Pence swore off harsh political tactics he used in "one of the most divisive and negative campaigns in Indiana's modern congressional history" while calling for "basic human decency."

"We need to have a greater conversation about race, and I think we somewhat are a little confused about how this gets resolved," Lankford said.

    3. WHY MANY YOUNG PEOPLE DISLIKE TRUMP
A new poll shows nearly two-thirds of Americans between the ages of 18 and 30 believe the presumptive Republican nominee is racist.

Pence was also slammed for the planned 2015 launch of "JustIN," a state-operated news service that was ditched after critics panned it as "Pravda on the Plains."
But he has also presided over Indiana's improving economy and plummeting unemployment rate, which Republicans credit to the state's low taxes, limited regulation and pro-business climate.

But not everyone has been able to turn their sympathy into action.

"The path that the pope proposes to divorced and remarried is exactly the same that the church proposes to all sinners: Go to confession, and your confessor, after evaluating all the circumstances, will decide whether to absolve you and admit you to the Eucharist or not," he wrote.

"I couldn't get through on my motorbike and, as I parked, there was a body next to my bike. It was when I looked into my rearview mirror that I saw all the other bodies just behind me," veteran Reuters photographer Eric Gaillard said.
Around a dozen bodies, some already covered with tablecloths taken from nearby restaurants, lay on what is one of France's best known seaside roads. Police and soldiers - many pointing their guns - were still in a state of confusion.

Gaillard, 58, has seen plenty of death and destruction in his 31 years with Reuters, but he never expected to see a war zone outside his flat on the Cote d'Azur.
"When you go to a war you know it's a hostile environment, you expect to see some unpleasant things ... (but) I was very shaken by what I saw that night because it's my city, Nice, 500 metres from my home, in a holiday setting."

Raised in Columbus, Indiana, in an Irish-Catholic family, Pence revered the Kennedys growing up and has said he voted for Jimmy Carter in 1980. He later identified as an evangelical Christian and was inspired to join the Republican Party by former President Ronald Reagan, whose "happy warrior" rhetorical style Pence has since tried to emulate."He doesn't see a congressman, he sees a black face," Clyburn said.
Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., the only other African-American in the Senate, wrote an essay for the Stanford University newspaper after he graduated from that school in the early 1990s about being stopped by police, guns pointed at him, for "fitting the description" of a car thief.

"I'm a conservative," Pence says. "But I'm not angry about it."
The former congressman also is a proven fundraiser with close ties to billionaire industrialists David and Charles Koch and their network of wealthy donors, many of whom have been dismissive of Trump.

Toynbee believed that civilizations of the East and West had essentially developed independently and their stories were separate. McNeill countered that they were very much part of one story, one of "contacts and "exchanges" and the triumph of Western innovation over the stagnation of Muslim and Chinese culture.
"Indeed, world history since 1500 may be thought of as a race between the West's growing power to molest the rest of the world and the increasingly desperate efforts of other peoples to stave Westerners off," wrote McNeill, who also cautioned that another civilization could yet overtake the West.

On Thursday, Scott delivered another speech to offer some solutions to the problems. He suggested more body cameras, better tracking of police shootings and better police training, among other ideas. He said he represents hope and progress - a U.S. senator whose grandfather picked cotton in the Deep South.

Over the past five decades, Israel, citing security needs, established a military bureaucracy that enforces movement restrictions on Palestinians through a complex permit system. Close to 600,000 Israelis, or 10 percent of Israel's Jewish population, now live in settlements on war-won land, often lured by government subsidies.
It's a multi-billion-dollar enterprise the international community overwhelmingly considers illegitimate.
Israel has also fragmented the territory of what is meant to be Palestine.

"In short, we try to steer X to be 'responsibly irresponsible' as we develop new products," Teller wrote in an online essay published Thursday.
The X lab understands most of its projects will fall by the wayside, but Teller doesn't view that as a waste of time - or money.
"To make progress toward any audacious idea, you have to make mistakes?_?you have to seek out frequent, messy, instructive failure that shows you what to do (or not do) next," Teller wrote.

In his essay, Toibin said he will tell the story of some of the displaced, including Nasser Nawaja, who now has to pay $7 to visit his birthplace at the archaeological site. Even then, Nawaja said, settlers only let him enter the site when he is accompanied by Israelis or foreigners.

Brooklyn Friends School teacher Kathleen Clinchy agrees that while technology has made it easier to cheat, it's now a lot harder to definitively catch a cheater.

Earlier this month, the Vatican-approved magazine La Civilta Cattolica ran an interview with Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn in which the Vienna archbishop pointedly rejected conservative claims that Francis' work didn't count as an authoritative teaching document.
FILE - This Friday, April 8, 2016 file photo shows Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn holding a copy of the post-synodal apostolic exhortation ' Amoris Laetitia ' (The Joy of Love) during a press conference at the Vatican. The Vatican is striking back at conservative critics of Pope Francis' landmark document on family life, ratcheting up its defense of the pope with new vigor as bishops begin implementing the document in dioceses around the world.

"What makes this essay memorable is the way she frames her main idea," he continued. "As I read through the opening paragraph describing a 2-year-old flying through Costco looking for free samples, I am compelled to read further in order to figure out, 'Where is this essay going?'"

It gets a little tricky because you don't want to accuse a student of cheating, so being able to have a conversation with strategic questioning is a good skill to have as a teacher. In younger grades, like middle school, you can get the parent involved and just ask them to revise the work together (AKA make sure your child stops cheating), but high school is a little murkier.

With campaign finance reports suggesting Manafort works for no salary, the relative newcomer to the Trump campaign has recently been willing to walk away if necessary. He issued Trump an ultimatum last month, saying he would not stay on the campaign if former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski remained. In Shaker Heights, a diverse and wealthy suburb of Cleveland, 50-year-old Lisa Vahey said she and other mothers at her son's high school are looking to turn an informal Facebook discussion about race into more concrete action.

"That means your First Amendment rights end at the tip of your opponent's nose - even in the matter of political rhetoric," Pence wrote, though he backtracked in the face of a difficult re-election campaign in Indiana.
In Congress, Pence sponsored a few bills that became law as amendments in other legislation. But he built a national following among conservatives for his willingness to buck his own party after opposing President George W. Bush's Medicare expansion and the No Child Left Behind education overhaul.

Even some Indiana Republicans have questioned his decisions, suggesting Pence has at times seemed more interested in appealing to national conservatives than doing what's best for the state. Pence's support of the state's religious objections law led to a revolt from the business community, which joined gay rights advocates in successfully pushing for changes to the law.

Yet rarely has Manafort played a more public role on Trump's behalf than he has this week in Cleveland, where he is a fixture inside the city's convention halls and makeshift television studios.
The 67-year-old campaign chairman caused a stir on the opening day of the convention by criticizing the Bush family, considered political royalty among many Republicans, as "part of the past" - even as he called for party unity. And he raised eyebrows on the next by deflecting responsibility on the speech fallout to Melania Trump herself.

As a nation reels, black lawmakers say they hope Scott's speech resonates, leading to a greater understanding about the divide between blue and black.
"I am absolutely convinced that most African-American members of Congress, particularly the men, have encountered some form of a hostile police encounter over the years," said Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.
Jeffries, 45, recalled twice when he was younger being pulled over by police and searched along with African-American friends. No reason was given for the stops. Several other black male lawmakers told similar stories.

In an effort to try and address recent police shootings, the House Judiciary Committee this week established a bipartisan working group to address police accountability, aggression toward law enforcement and public safety concerns related to those issues. Jeffries and Richmond are both on the panel.

"In the jewelry store, they lock the case when I walk in," Booker wrote. "In the shoe store, they help the white man who walks in after me."
Booker said he read the article, written when he was 23, at the Senate Democratic caucus meeting Tuesday.
Of Scott's speech, Booker said it was powerful and "frankly showed a lot of courage for him to tell the truth."

Being beautiful might be considered part of any celebrity's job, male or female. So is it fair for an entertainer to use her image to promote her work on an album or magazine cover, then balk at media scrutiny of her appearance?

Indeed, Manafort is no stranger to power politics.

Robert Milesnick, a 39-year-old civil attorney in Portland, Oregon, penned a sharply worded essay titled "My White Male Privilege Is Complicit In Black Male Killing" that ran in the local African-American newspaper this month.
"At some point, to not do or say anything is complicit," Milesnick told The Associated Press. "These things keep happening because people that look like me don't do or say anything."

"I do think there was an opportunity missed here to tell us much more about herself," he continued. "I can only assume that the rest of her application is truly stellar, because based on this essay alone, I do not see anything that screams admit," he said.

McNeill always looked for new ways to explain the world. He did not track change through the feats of great men, but through everyday innovation, technology and the mixing of cultures. He documented the democratizing effect of the close-order military drill, the moldboard plow's transformation of agriculture, the impact of potato farming. He studied closely what happened when "cakes of custom collided," whether between rural and urban cultures, rival religions or rival countries.

Francis didn't create a church-wide pass for these Catholics, but suggested - in vague terms and strategically placed footnotes - that bishops and priests could do so on a case-by-case basis after accompanying them on a spiritual journey of discernment.
    The conservative criticism was swift.
American Cardinal Raymond Burke, a figurehead for archconservatives who was removed by Francis as the head of the Vatican's supreme court, insisted that the document wasn't part of the church's teaching magisterium but rather was a personal reflection on meetings of bishops about family matters.
