Force Visitors To Your Site By Creating a Traffic Ultimatum

The word "ultimatum" means to set forth terms or conditions where the other party feels the threat of serious penalty if they don't agree to them. I believe that through legitimate practices a site owner can create a situation where the visitor feels compelled to visit your site because they feel they risk not finding what they're looking for if they don't. You've basically created what I term a "traffic ultimatum".

Think of web traffic as a river and your web site as a hole that you're digging fifty feet from the river's edge. Your ideal situation is to have that river run directly into your hole. If you dig deep enough you may see some water seep in underground but the majority of the traffic just keeps running right by completely oblivious that the hole, or your site, is even there.

What the website owner needs to do is to create a path to his site much like you would dig a trench from the river's edge to your hole. He does that through various means such as on site SEO and creating positive backlinks to the site.

When done correctly the two methods will work hand in hand with the end result being that your site will slowly begin to appear higher and higher in the search engine results. Think of that as moving your hole closer to the river. While the trench remains the same size the closer the hole is to the river the more likely the water will flow where you need it to go.

The more quality backlinks you create the wider the trench gets. The wider the trench gets the closer the hole gets to the river, because your search engine ranking increases. The better your SEO is, the faster your site moves towards the river of traffic.

Even though you're seeing results from your hard work, unless you're ranking in the top three spots of the search engines, the majority of the web traffic is not going to your site. Most people follow predictable patterns when using search engines. Almost everyone clicks on one of the first three search engine results. They can't help themselves anymore.

When you create enough quality links to your site, dig enough trenches to that imaginary hole, it's almost like dragging that hole into the river. Like water, web traffic tends to go where it's led, following the path of least resistance. Searchers tend to click on one of the first three results because they have learned that those sites are where they will find what they're looking for.

By positioning your site so that it shows up in one of those first three spots you create a situation for the browser where they would need to make a conscious decision to not go where they think the answer is. To purposely go against their natural tendency. Because they believe the answer lies there, they would be penalizing themselves by not going to your site. You still need to make the sale once they visit, but by properly positioning your site you have in essence forced them to visit your site.

This is why you should never settle for your site being in the bottom half of the search results, even on page one. There is no natural compelling force for anyone viewing the results to visit your site. This also makes a good argument for also optimizing your site for relative keyword phrases and to place links on any type of hub site that is directly focusing on the niche you're targeting.

It's possible to dominate a niche to such a degree that no matter where a potential visitor looks or how they look your site keeps showing up in front of them. Like water in a river, web traffic tends to take the path of least resistance. Even if you're not able to grab that number one listing, you can still create the ultimatum feeling by showing up everywhere your audience is. Eventually the fear that they might be missing something will compel them to visit your site. After all, you didn't really give them a choice.

Think about how visitors are finding your website. Is it by luck or are they being naturally guided there? How many more visitors would you have if you gave them no choice?
