Unfortunately, most of us experience stress and anxiety on a daily basis. It can be work related, health related, caused by financial strain, or any number of things. Learning to effectively manage stress and anxiety is an important part of maintaining both your mental and physical health. Increased stress can cause you to have headaches, be unable to sleep, lose your ability to focus on important tasks, and cause you to be insensitive to others around you.

One way to lower your stress level is to try and focus only on the small things in your life that you have control over and can change. Worrying about global issues, the economy, and your friend’s problems, all of those will only increase your stress level. Try to not have a pessimistic view on life, try to always find something good in every situation. Don’t blame yourself for the problems of the world. Accept what you cannot change, and spend your time making a difference in your own life.

Do things that will help boost your self-esteem and confidence levels, so that you will have more faith in your ability to handle stressful situations. Learn to focus on what you consider to be your good qualities, and work on the ones that you are unhappy with. Focus on all of the things you have accomplished so far in your lifetime, rather than all of the things you still have not gotten to do. Make a list of the things you haven’t gotten around to yet, and set goals and make plans to do them in the near future.

Find something that interests you, such as collecting stamps, or some kind of craft, and make time for it at the end of a busy day. Use your new hobby as a way to unwind and take your mind away from all of the stresses and problems of your life. Doing something like this before bed, that takes your thoughts away from all the things that cause stress and anxiety in your life, will help you sleep better, and feel more able to face the next day.

Setting achievable goals can help you get where you want to be, without becoming frustrated and giving up. If you set small goals along the way, that get you to your one big goal, you are more likely to see it through to the end. You will get a big ego boost every time you achieve one of the goals on your list, knowing that you are one step closer to accomplishing that one big goal.

Make time for your friends. Get out of the house to do things with your friends, or just talking about your problems, can help lower your stress level tremendously. Sometimes talking things out, or getting others perspectives on things that cause you stress, can give you new ideas on how to handle stressful situations.

Exercising on a regular basis is not only good for your overall health, but can do wonders for lowering your stress levels as well.

Take time out of your busy day and just focus on yourself. Take a long, hot soak in the tub, read a book, take a nap, or go for a walk. Taking your mind away from stress inducing areas in your life, and pampering yourself, will greatly reduce your stress and anxiety levels.

If stress and anxiety seem to be controlling your life, it is probably time to consider seeking professional help. Talk to your physician, maybe he can suggest a therapist or support group that may be able to help you. He may also give you a prescription for some anxiety medicines which may help. Don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed to seek help. Letting stress and anxiety control you can lead to other mental health problems, such as phobias, fear of social interaction, etc. Realizing that you can’t handle things on your own, and seeking help, means that you are already on the road to recovery.
