The glow jewelry based on technology of glow sticks is made of a long plastic tube, bent into a circle to function as a bracelet or necklace. The tube contains a mixture of phenyl oxlyate and a fluorescent dye. Inside the tube is a smaller glass tube containing hydrogen peroxide.
Glow necklaces, glow earrings, glow bracelets, glow bangles, glow rings etc. are “snapped” before wearing. When these are bent or "snapped", the inner glass tube breaks, and the hydrogen peroxide and phenyl oxylate mix together and a chemical reaction takes place. The reaction produces energy in the form of light. The color of the glow jewelry is determined by the fluorescent dye.
Once broken, the glow jewelry cannot be turned off. Its glowing effect lasts for several hours. The outside temperature influences the glowing of glow jewelry. The jewelry glows longer in cold temperatures, but it glows brighter but for shorter span in warm temperatures.
The LED light glow jewelry is battery-powered glow jewelry. The LED light is attached to the jewelry backing and can be made into rings, pins, or earrings. The LED light helps the jewelry to flash on and off. It is used in flashing bracelets, flashing necklaces, flashing rings, flashing headwear, and flashing novelties. The LED light is also used to create a strobe effect at clubs and parties.
Sometimes the light is placed inside a plastic or glass casing, which often has designs which may include happy faces, flowers, and hearts. Its battery is replaceable, and this makes led glow jewelry more durable than the chemical-powered type.
