Why does silver jewelry turn black?
When silver jewelry comes into contact with the air and light, it has an acidic reaction which gradually, with time, turns black.
What can be done to preserve the jewelry
Do not, under any condition, spray perfume on the jewel. When spraying perfume or when spreading on moisturizing cream, it is preferable to remove the jewel or simply put it on after the cosmetic cream has been absorbed into the skin (at least 10 minutes).
It is advisable to remove jewelry while house cleaning and using different chemicals, such as bleach, etc.
Remove the jewelry while washing dishes, swimming in pools with chlorine and when coming into contact with other liquids. (It is recommended not to wear silver jewelry when going to the Dead Sea, for example).
Storing Silver Jewelry:
After removing the jewelry it is recommended to store them in a dark place protected from rays of light. It is advisable to wrap them up in a soft and tightly closed woven material. Store each item in separate boxes to prevent them from scratches.
Cleaning Jewelry:
Under no condition rub the jewel with scotchbrite or with a hard brush. In cases where the jewel starts to turn black, spread on it some white toothpaste, and with the help of an old toothbrush lightly rub it and rinse with cold water after a few minutes. The jewel can be cleaned with a special cloth especially designed for this purpose. It is worthwhile to buy a pair of gloves which already has absorbed cleaning material meant for jewelry from a store which sells silverware, and they shine and clean the jewels extremely well.
In tough cases use special jewelry cleaning preparations. When using these, pay good attention to the instructions.
